DAYCARE SERVICES

Daycare was a vital service provided by the YWCA for low income children in the New Orleans area.

The proposed daycare core is located on the D’Hemecourt Street side to provide easy and safe access to the street for drop off. It also provides an opportunity for natural light in all classroom spaces and visual connection to the park across the street.

Classroom Design

The proposed classrooms are separated by age groups that include (1) classrooms for infants, (2) classrooms for toddlers, and (3) classrooms for pre-school/school age children. Toddler and pre-school classrooms are grouped to utilize bathroom and storage spaces between classrooms

COUNSELING SERVICES

Battered Women Counseling Offices

The proposed wing consolidates the majority these offices into 6 offices that can provide both group and individual counseling.

Refuge Area

The waiting room is considered an area of refuge to collect thoughts and wait to be seen by a counselor. This enforces the need to provide a mental level of privacy and security as well as a physical barrier from other functions in the facility.

The majority of the Counseling provided by the YWCA included family and battered women counseling which requires a level of privacy from other spaces in the facility. Because of this, the counseling wing was developed to control entry into the wing and buffer the counseling office and waiting area from public spaces. This affords a level of privacy and security that was difficult to achieve in the existing Main Building as many offices opened to the public and semi-public areas including staff lounge and meeting areas. The proposed design includes counseling rooms, a waiting area, circulation, storage space, and a private restroom to help reinforce the physical and mental separation from the rest of the building.

FACILITY & STAFF

Offices and Support Spaces

The proposed facility includes offices for the Executive Director, Director’s Assistant, Accountant, and coordinator. A small conference room is also incorporated as a space for staff to gather for small meetings or with members of the public.

Support Spaces consist of a copy area integrated in the circulation space along with file storage.
